Making business cards is a way for older children to advertise services such as lawn mowing, dog walking or babysitting, and a way for kids of all ages to give friends their names and contact information. You can make business cards at home using a computer, printer and business card stock.
Step 1
Buy business card stock, available in the paper section of many office supply stores. Business card stock comes in perforated or clean-edge versions that make the cards easy to separate after you print them. Purchase card stock that is laser or ink jet compatible, depending on the type of printer you have.
Step 2
Download a template for Microsoft Word (see Resources) or another word processing or layout software program. Avery (see Resources below) offers blank templates for all of its products (which also work for store-brand business card stock products that have the same layout).
Step 3
Open the template in your word processing or layout software. If you can't see the template lines in Microsoft Word, go to the Table menu and click "Show Gridlines."
Step 4
Type the information you want on the kid's business card in one of the card template areas, such as the child's name, business name (if any), phone number or email address. For security purposes, you may not want to include the child's address. An older child may want to add a brief description of her services, while a young child may prefer just his name and a funny saying or message.
Step 5
Experiment with different fonts and sizes until the business card text looks the way you want. If you have a color printer, you can also experiment with changing the color of the text, or using several colors.
Step 6
Add clip art, or even a small digital photo of the child, to the business card if desired.
Step 7
Print the business card on plain paper to see how it looks, and make any changes needed. Sometimes fonts and colors appear different on a printed page than on the screen.
Step 8
Copy the text and graphics of the business card and paste it into each of the business card areas on the template. Most templates come with 10 business cards per sheet, and in most cases, you'll want each card to look the same.
Step 9
Print the business cards on the test page that came with the card stock to check the alignment and layout, then print the cards on the real business card stock.
Step 10
Separate the cards by folding them back and forth several times along the perforations or clean-edge lines until they snap apart.

Tip: For very young children, you may want to make business cards by hand using markers or colored pencils and stickers. You can use pre-punched business card stock, or even 3 by 5 cards, to turn making business cards into a family craft project.
