People like Carly Simon were performers who are what would today be considered contemporary music. It was basically a kind of a folk music, but more pop, more personal, and maybe less political and significantly more melodic and not really difficult in anyway. I mean there were a lot of people who are really popular in the 70s like Elton John, Billy Joel, and I guess Peter Frampton was pretty popular for a year or two. Turn on classic rock radio and basically you will hear very popular music from the 70s.
