Can I cool a room with a portable evaporative cooler?

Portable evaporative coolers should be thought of as spot coolers, not room coolers.

Customers tell us our 110-volt Evaporative Cooler Models, cool their 150 to 175 square foot bedrooms just great for sleeping when the air is dry. Then we have customers tell us it only cools where you point it, however they were not complaining because they are comfortable. We think of energy saving Portable Evaporative Coolers as Spot Coolers.

If you are in an area that is recommended for Evaporative Cooling then you may use a Portable Evaporative Cooler. Just plug it into a 110-volt outlet that you would plug a lamp into and if possible set by a window or some other opening. The opening should be just enough to draw in the hot outside air but not open so much that a great deal of excess hot air is entering the room. You will need to provide another opening like leaving a door open going into the hallway or another room.

Important tips on Ventilation: You must not recirculate the evaporative coolers cooled air because the air is slightly humidified and if the air is allowed to recirculate the cooler becomes ineffective and will not cool.

If your area of the world is typically humid you need Refrigerated Air Conditioning. If 12-volts is your main source of power then we have Portable Air Conditioner Models in 12-Volt Models available that use ice. However if you have 110-volts available your least expensive option is to purchase a window air-conditioning model locally.
