What is a pregnancy massage?

Pregnancey massage helps with muscle tension during two different times; prenatal and postnatal.

There are two types of pregnancy massage - prenatal and postnatal massage. And the prenatal massage begins really as soon as the person discovers they are pregnant and wants a little help with that. But what happens a lot of times with pregnancy is the center of gravity on the person moves forward due to the weight of the baby as the baby grows. That throws a certain kind of stress on the body, in the back particularly. There are a lot of mental and emotional changes and new things to deal with that women have when they become pregnant. So massage throughout that time period is really good to help calm the body and help the muscles when they get up tight from the extra weight and the center of gravity thing. Some people have doulas that are actually massaging the mother-to-be before, during and after the birthing process. It is nice to actually have someone there who has been a support person all along and can help with massaging the body while the woman is giving birth because it is so intense. It depends on what they know and exactly what they are taught; of course not all the approaches to teaching will be exactly the same. There would be some of that in most people's training, I would assume, certain kinds of pressure points that benefit pregnant women. Some of those pressure points might speed up the birthing process a little bit and help the body to let go and give birth easier. Others would just be used for calming.

Then after the birth there are things that can be done through massage again to just relieve the stress and the fatigue. But also as time goes by, massage can help the muscles (particularly of the stomach) to recover from the days that they were stretched out and long. I have even had a students who had given birth and then received some of what we call neuromuscular work on their tummy and been amazed at the overnight change in how the tummy is recovering; speeding that process up. So there are a lot of things that can help. And then of course you got the baby too so a lot of people will teach the parents how to massage the baby.
