Puerto Rico Facts

San Juan, Puerto Rico is just east of a Caribbean Island called the Dominican Republic.

Puerto Rico is an easy to get to destination, because it's a part of the US. We have never needed passports, but that may change under new government regulations. They're even talking about requiring passports for places like Hawaii, because it's off the mainland.

The weather in Puerto Rico is a balmy 82 degrees year around and not too windy because it's a large island. Like most of the Caribbean Islands, there really aren't any seasons the way we would think of seasons.

Puerto Rico is an island that lies just the east of the Dominican Republic, about hour and a half south of the Miami Coast. It has a lot of history and many different things to see and do depending on which side of the island you're on. It has the only tropical rain forest system within the United States. The island itself is comprised of about 3400 square miles. Because it's an American island, they speak English, but many also speak Spanish. It's a very densely populated island of around 3.6 million. They are proud of their history and heritage. The island was discovered by Columbus and then settled by Ponce de Leon primarily for farming and livestock. It's a very vivacious place. They love tourists. If you're walking down the street and don't look like you know where you are going, someone will pull over and ask if they can help you or give you a ride.

One of the things Puerto Rico is known for is their coqui, which is a tiny tree frog. You hear them singing everywhere. They are very loud with a high pitched chirp not at all like a mainland frog's croaking.

Go to www.puertorico.com to get a map of the island and more information. It's a great destination for people who want to experience the Caribbean but who also want use US dollars and are not comfortable with foreign cultures, languages, or foods. I definitely would not say Puerto Rico is a place to go and stay in a resort the whole time. It's for people who want to get out and see the country. Get a rental car and make your way around the island. You have the tropical rain forest to the east, San Juan in the north, and lots of caves because they get a lot rain. They are quite famous for their caves.
