One of the inevitable things about faucets is that they will need to be repaired or replaced from time to time. If the water lines leading to the bathroom sink faucets are old, you may want to replace them as well. It is recommended that you use the self-sealing water lines because they have rubber gaskets built in. Be sure to turn the water supply off either at the shutoff valves underneath the bathroom sink or at the water meter.

Step 1
Locate the valves coming from the wall under the sink and close them. If you don't have valves under the sink, you will need to turn the main supply line off, which is located at the water meter. Next, follow the waterline up to the bottom side of the bathroom sink countertop. Loosen the nut that attaches the water line to the faucet. Repeat this for the second waterline.
Step 2
Locate the rod that leads to the stopper inside the drainpipe. Loosen the nut that holds this mechanism in place. Next, locate the clip that holds the rod to the plunger that raises and lowers the stopper and pull it to the end of the rod. This will release rod from the plunger.
Step 3
Climb out from underneath the sink and gently lift the old faucet from the bathroom sink. Clean off any residue built up that was underneath the faucet before installing a new one.
Step 4
Look back underneath the cabinet and check the water supply lines to be sure they are not leaking. Loosen the nuts to the water supply lines with a ½-inch wrench if you are going to replace them as well. Be certain the water supply valves are closed.
Skill: Moderately Challenging
Ingredients:
- Adjustable pliers
- ½ inch open end wrench
- ¾ inch open end wrench
Tip: Be sure you have plenty of towels to clean excess water that spills from the lines.
Use gentle pressure when removing the water lines from the faucet or from the shutoff valves.
Warning: Do not bend the rod that raises and lowers the plunger as it will hamper future use.
Stop the process of loosening the nuts from a waterline to the faucet if water spews out under pressure.
