How do you reupholster a car seat?

Learn about the process of upholstering an automobile seat.

First, you unbolt the seat, and tear off the fabric. Most of the time, you use the old cover as a pattern, says Steven Blanchard, owner of Blanchard's Upholstery. He has been doing upholstery work for 17 years.

Next, you separate the seat backs from the bottoms. Then remove the tracks to get at the hog rings that hold the seat fabric to the frame. Use a screwdriver to force the rings to twist open. Leave the hog rings in place where the upholstery is attached through the seat bun. With the fabric out of the way, it is easy to remove the rest of the hog rings, and then the seat bun should come right off. Use chalk and make marks before you take the old seat apart. Make chalk marks while they are strung together, and then when you take it all apart, you have the chalk marks on the panel.

When removing the seat bun, it reveals a cloth cover that is used to keep the seat springs from cutting into the seat bun. This fabric has to be removed very carefully. After all this, you should have the seat frame only. Paint it if necessary and clean it, so it looks new. Then apply a new cloth to the frame with the boarder padding, and the wire tie down installed. Then apply the seat bun, glue it in place and it should be ready to install the fabric. You have to hog ring the fabric in place with the fabric turned inside out. Then the fabric needs to be wrapped around the front of the frame. You stretch the pieces out, and keep adding the chalk marks to the new pieces so that when you sew it back together, if all your chalk marks line up, you have a perfect seat. After this process, you should have a completed seat base with latch bracket and bumpers installed.

The seat buns for the backs are made of two pieces, says Blanachard. The smaller piece is glued in place. The backs of the frames have strips of padding glued to them to prevent the upholstery from rubbing and tearing the sides. Clean up the frame and paint it the same color as the other one. Then add the fabric until it is fully covered.

Next, grab the headrest and do reupholster it as well. Get the seat tracks and paint them to look brand new to match the seats.

If one does not want to go to the trouble of reupholstering their car seats, seat covers are an economical way of changing the look to a seat. Seat covers prevent stains, dirt or other things that add more damage to the car's seats. There are custom seat covers that fit your seat perfectly. They are custom made per vehicle application and fit your factory seat and shape very tightly. According to stylinconcepts.com, custom seat covers take into account factory headrests, armrests, center console, and seat controls.
