Are there safety rules one must always follow?

Always wear goggles. If you are smashing tiles with hammer you don't want to do it blindly in a grocery sack because you can damage the glaze on your ceramic tile.

Always wear goggles. If you are smashing tiles with hammer you don't want to do it blindly in a grocery sack because you can damage the glaze on your ceramic tile. I always use a small tack hammer because it's lightweight and I can control it and I hit my tiles on the unglazed side right into a leather glove that I am wearing on my other hand. That's the best way to preserve the glaze on your tile, but I never recommend smashing glass or a mirror with the hammer. It's dangerous and unless you are going for a very specific look, sometimes it can look kind of weird.

When you are working with grout and other things that require you to mix powder with water you should wear a dust mask or some type of protection. And never go barefoot in your mosaics studio.
