The key to selling a car fast is to post an ad in as many different places as possible. There are online ads, print classified ads and many other ways to get the word out about your sale. The more people who hear about your sale, the more likely you are to get an interested customer, and the more quickly you will close the deal.
Step 1
Get any necessary repairs done to your car. It should be certified according to emissions standards in your state, with new oil and filters and a clean bill of health. This will make it more attractive to potential buyers, and will let you get a better price for it.
Step 2
Look up the Kelly Blue Book price for your car. If you overvalue your car, you will have a hard time selling it (see Resources below).
Step 3
Post ads on Craigslist or other free online classified ad services. Include the car's make, model and condition, a price, whether or not you are willing to negotiate, and your contact info. You should also put up pictures. A lot of people check these sites, and it won't cost you anything (see Resources below).
Step 4
Post the same ad in auto trading websites and papers. Most of these sites will let you post an ad with at least one picture for under $20 (see Resources below).
Step 5
Talk to your car mechanic. He may know people in the market for the car you are selling, or he may be in the market himself. Many mechanics like to buy older cars and either use them for parts or customize them before reselling them.
Step 6
Slash the price. If you aren't making a sale, drop the price by between a few hundred and a thousand dollars and try posting more ads.
Step 7
Sell the car to a used car dealership. You will not get as much money for it at a dealership, but you will be able to sell it quickly. Kelly Blue Book has recommended prices for selling to dealerships, so be sure to check it before you negotiate a price for your vehicle (see Resources below).
