How to Sell Used Cars to Junk Yards

If you have a used car that you no longer want and want to unload it quickly, you can sell it to a local junkyard. Some junkyards will even come and pick up the used car for you. Follow these suggestions to sell your unwanted car quickly and efficiently.

Step 1

Find a local junkyard. Use computer listings, local classifieds or flyers (see Resources below). Don't settle for just one place, though. Call around and ask how much they pay for used cars. It's possible that the first place you find might not even offer money for cars since they may be just looking for scrap.

Step 2

Ask what the terms of sale are. They'll likely ask you to drive the car to the yard. If this is not possible due to the car being inoperable, you will likely be expected to pay the cost of towing it to the yard. That may make the exchange non-profitable. If the car is inoperable, ask the junkyard if they would come pick it up. Some junkyards have tow trucks for just such purposes.

Step 3

Have someone follow you in another car to the junkyard so you have a way to get home after you sell the car. If the car is being towed, you simply need to follow the tow truck driver to the junkyard.

Step 4

Show the junkyard manager your ID and sign the car title over to him. This is necessary because the yard needs a legal record for the car to be allowed in the lot.
