To combine the lye and the water you need a hard plastic spoon, rubber glove, a face mask and some protective eyewear. Then when you go to mix the lye in your oil together you need another large spoon. You need a thermometer that's capable of measuring between 75 and 120 degrees. I found the best ones are the meat thermometers. You need a four-coat stainless steel pan. You don't want to use aluminium or Teflon because that can corrode when it's in contact with the lye. You'll want an electric hand blender, if it's called a stick blender. You don't want to use the regular ones or you'll make soap wood. A stick blender is straight up and down. A stainless steel or glass mixing bowl is needed if you want to add herbs or other additives to the soap. you have to take some out, mix it and then pour it back into the main solution.
You need someway to mold your soap. It can be as simple as a cardboard box or you can get molds that can be purchased online or at craft stores. You need something to cover it; a cardboard box or lid. You also need a blanket or towel because it then goes into a cooking stage after you blend it all together. After you have poured it into your molds, you cover it up with a blanket. You can put your hand under there about an hour or so later and feel it starting to heat up because it's going through a chemical process. After about 24-48 hours, you can take the blankets off and the bar of soap is hard. It can be released from the mold and then you set it out to dry for two to four weeks. And then it's ready to go. It is one of the most moisturizing things you can do to your skin.
When you combine the water and the lye, it's going to go up to 200 degrees on its own. A real important thing to know is that you never pour the water into the lye. You always have your cold water in the plastic container and you pour the lye into that container. Otherwise, if you pour water into lye, it has a volcano effect and it goes all over and you have got a mess.
