Advantages are if you are working in a small space, where you haven't got a lot of square area, you can stack things on top of each other and not worry about taking up so much square footage. Disadvantages? Some would say ergonomics would be a disadvantage because you are having to reach up to grab stuff out of one and put it into the lower.
Do they last a long time? Yes, they do last a long time, just like any washer or drier. They have the same reliability level.
Are they smaller than the average washer or dryer? That is the common perception, that they are smaller. Whirlpool actually markets a couple. We have things called Thins Twins which are made stackable and thin because people want them to be smaller for condos, apartment living, small house living, or empty nesters. Then, you have something like Duette products, which are huge, as far as capacity goes. They are also stackable.
