Quilting fabrics are mostly cotton fabrics that have been popular for I would say probably 150 years, although there are a number of companies making more polyester fabrics and different materials. There are fabrics with beading and things like that, but standard cotton fabric is number one. Most people use colored or printed fabrics for the top layer and then you will need padding or bedding for the middle layer and a plain fabric for the backing.
