Your basics supplies are going to be mostly fabrics. Quilting fabrics are mostly cotton fabrics that have been popular for I would say probably 150 years, although there are a number of companies making more polyester fabrics and different materials. There are fabrics with beading and things like that, but standard cotton fabric is number one. Most people use colored or printed fabrics for the top layer and then you will need padding or bedding for the middle layer and a plain fabric for the backing.

You are going to need a rotary cutter. There is a misconception that people use scissors a lot in quilting, but really for a more accurate cut people use a rotary cutter, which is a kind of a circular eraser that allows you to travel up and down the fabric on a cutting board. You would also need a cutting mat, which a soft mat that allows you to have a flat surface and not mess up your table. Depending on the type of quilting you will be doing, you will also need needles and thread and a quilting frame or machine. That's really all you need to get started, although there are a great deal of tools and accessories available.
