When you pierce your tongue you are putting a pin through your tongue and you irritate it. To reduce swelling you can suck on ice and that would help. I have never seen a tongue get infected but they could, of course. The tattoo artist or piercer rinses the mouth out with products before the piercing and takes care that he has nice clean equipment. That is the only thing you can do to avoid infection once he begins the process. The most likely time for an infection to occur is in the care afterwards. There are a very few problems with tongue piercing. The tongue is designed to heal quick and easy. Because it is very easy to injure the piercing and so that it does heal quickly, we usually suggest the use of either a strong mouthwash like Listerine or one of the commercially made products like H2 Ocean to rinse the mouth. H2 Ocean is a kind of a clarified free salt solution that helps with healing time. We also suggest that people have soft things to eat for a little while and nothing highly spiced that would irritate it or cause a real irritation. Just have nice quality food and then after eating, rinse off the piercing well with water and Listerine or with the mouth care products. It can take as long as eight weeks to heal enough for swelling or soreness to go away. Do rinse well after eating and use the mouth product for a while. Getting your tongue pierced could affect your teeth. When you whip your tongue around with the piercing clicking against your teeth, you could crack the teeth. If you bite down on it, you could hurt your tongue and the teeth.
Tongue piercing cost approximately $60-70.
