I this business because there are a lot of ingenious things that happen constantly and we have a full shop. We have eight jewelers and they all have been here a long time. I have some jewelers that have been here for minimum of about five years and I have a couple who have been here for 16 years. They seem to have an intuitive thought about how I want things done. We like to do it right. We don't like to do anything halfway or halfhearted. We always have the owner of the jewelry in mind when we make it. I have a skill that if it comes up that I kind and I ask the right questions to find out what the actual customer wants. We work with stores and we have some public that we work with. Stores will send in a job back that says what they want a custom piece and I will call back and I will get the questions. I will ask him what kind of person are they? Are they really neat and tidy or are they artistic? I ask them what type of car they drive. You want to make a piece that matches their personality and matches their feelings. An example would be if they have an old BMW that is in the perfect condition, they maybe very neat, but a little eclectic. And you can bring that into the design a little bit.
It's like a house design. How your house is designed? If you don't design it then sometimes people like things to just happen. They can be fed what they like but I like to find out what each person likes, what kind of person they are and how they like symmetry. Some people like art where it's has a little flare, a little design to it. I like to find out which kind of person I am dealing. It is going to cost more than a piece that you are going to see in a store.
Because each detail is taken into consideration of what the customer wants. I do a drawing design first. I do several drawing designs or ideas of the particular design the customer likes. They pick one or often times redraw it with different views and then have that approved. I will then make a wax or carbon wax of the ring is proposed. The customer can look at the wax to get a dimension of it. It takes time to make a custom piece. It's not something you are going to go in the store and pick out. It takes a little time. The third aspect is it is very personal when it's done. It is their piece of jewelry. Many times I will get a napkin and let the customer sit around with the boyfriend or girlfriend and get them to draw it on a napkin. What the person actually draws on the paper might, 99% of the time, be the final piece. I just have to redraw it to make it realistic, to make it fit the stones and the finger. Many times that design is the one they really want. That personal piece of jewelry often times is the most important thing they own. They have that because then it is personal and romance is there. It's in that ring because they designed it and made it. The person wearing the ring actually owns the right to the design.
