It really depends on that your current weight is and current mean body mass. For example if someone weighed 150 lbs, in a 24 hour day they would need about 1473 calories if they won't be doing anything but sleeping the whole day. Their body will gain about 1473 calories to maintain your activity level. If you are behind a desk and worked out three times a week just to maintain their activity level, they probably need about 2200 calories. The general recommendation is 2200 calorie diet for the average person. I don't think the average person weighs 150 lbs anymore with 30% or more of the population being clinically obese.
You don't want to overwhelm an individual with complete changes because it's almost too overwhelming. It's going to shock them almost into the point of not wanting to do it. After trying a strict plan, what happens next time is you work so hard, are so strict and don't get any results. Why would you want to do that again?
