Quilting is the creation of quilts. The easiest definition I could give you for a quilt is it's kind of like a fabric sandwich. There are three layers to a quilt. There is a top layer, which is the one of course that the people see. Then there is a middle layer of usually cotton bedding and that's what makes the quilt soft and pliable. And then there is a back to it, which is usually just plain. What makes it a quilt is sewing all three of these layers together. Whereas a blanket may be only one layer of fabric, a quilt is three layers put together.
People develop different techniques of quilting, from hand quilting to machine quilting. One reason machine quilting has gained a lot of popularity is just because it's a lot faster and people can do a lot more things on machine and than they can do with their hands.
Quilting is mostly an individual hobby nowadays, but I see quilts that mothers and daughters or groups have worked on all the time. They each contribute a block or blocks and then sew them all together. In the olden days, a group of 10-20 women would all work on one quilt, but these days it is mostly an individual artist making the quilts.
