Information on what Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is, how to determine if your child might have it and it's treatment.
There's alot of parent's frustrated out there because their kids can't seem to sit still or are having problems paying attention in school. The reason why their so frustrated is because alot of time what their children have is misdiagnosised and labeled as a behavior problem. The illness these parent's children suffer from is ADHD or
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
There are three million children and adults who suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Three to five percent of all children and four percent of adults have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Children with attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder have a condition of surplus energy, racing thoughts and an inability to focus or concentrate. The exact cause of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is unknown. There are both genetic and
environomental factors associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not only frustrating for those who have the condition, but also for loved ones and doctors attempting to
treat the condition.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is triggered by deficits in certain brain chemicals, specifically the neurotransmitters dopamine, morepinephrine and the serotonin. Scientists have identified that there are differences in
the brain area involved with regulating attention and body movements. Scientists have also found key areas in the brain that are smaller and less active in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This is why attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder seems to run in families.
Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have problems in school too. They tend to have a problem remaining seated, they distract easily, have a difficulty awaiting turn in games or group activities, often blurting out
answers before questions are completed, difficulty following directions, difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play
activities, often shift from one uncompleted task to another, difficulty playing quietly, talk excessively, interupt others, doesn't listen to what is being said, forgets things necessary for tasks or activities, engaging in physically
dangerous activities and does things without regard to the consequences. Other children sometimes stay away from children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder because they don't understand it.
At home children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder demand constant attention and interupt their parents and siblings. They also have a hard time playing games because they are too distracted. They have a hard time sitting
through dinner.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is diagnoised basically by elimination. There are health problems which might make a wrong diagnosis because they can resemble attention deficit hyperactivity disorder such as hearing and visual disturbances. While conditions like depression, anxiety and learning disablilities coexist with the disorder of attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder. After doctors rule out other possibilities they base there their attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis from tests taken and interviews with the children and their parents. They also base
their decision on standarized rating scales completed by their parents and teachers. After being diangnosised with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder they usually are put on medications and behavioral therapy. The drugs have some parents frantic because they are powerful drugs such as Ritalin. Short term effects of Ritalin is loss of appetite
which results in weight loss, insomnia, headaches, stomachaches, drowsiness, potential liver damage, facial tics and a sense of stress.
There are downsides to Ritali such as it's made from the same family as cocaine, it lasts only four hours, it treats only some of the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, provides superficial healing and it doesn't treat the root of the problem. It also provides side effects such as loss of appetite, anxiety, insomnia, tics, headaches and stomachaches. Children should be taught to take their medication regularly and the medication taken will be for the person's entire lifespan.
Before one diagnosis is started the child must show symptoms at home and at school. The child must have showed symptoms for six months. Symptoms must began before age seven. Sometimes the symptoms aren't recongnized until the child's older than age seven , this is due to school activities becoming harder.
Signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ia that often a child fails to pay attention to details and makes careless mistakes, has difficulty sustaining attention, doesn't listen when being spoken to, has difficulty staying organized, struggles with instructions; fails to complete homework or tasks, avoids tasks requiring a sustained amount of mental effort,
loses things related to schoolwork and tasks, is easily distracted and the child is forgetful.
There are things parents can do to help their child with attenction deficit hyperactivity disorder. The parent can help with the child's homework because children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder need more help with thier
homwork. Parents can help by not allowing the child to unwind longer than one-half hour before school, this will allow the child to tackle their homework easier. Making sure the child understands the assignment and have the child
have a notebook where they can keep track of their assignments, the parent should go over this notebook with the child on a daily basis. If the child doesn't understand the assignment, the assignment should be broken down into
more manageable blocks. The use of a timer, the child should be awarded after each ten or twenty minute interval that the child works on their homework with no outside attractions. If the child can't finish the assignment, the
assignment should be modified. Be consistent with the child because children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder need more routine than children who don't have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. All children love
lots of praise so give them lots of it.
There's an organization called CHADD or (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). This organization was founded in 1987, in response to the frustrations and sense of isolation that was experienced by
parents and their children dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
If your child has any of these symptoms and you feel that they might have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, you should take them to see a doctor. If the doctor confirms that your child has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, you should do everything you can to make this condition easier on the child, which in turn will make the condition a little easier on you to live with.
