Jozsef Attila, poet, was born in Budapest, Hungary. His father left the family when he was three, and his mother died when he was 14.

BIOGRAPHY

Jozsef Attila, poet, was born in Budapest, Hungary. His father left the family when he was three, and his mother died when he was 14. He lived for two years with a foster family beginning at the age of 5. When he was nine years old, he attempted suicide. He succeeded when he was 32.

Attila was educated at the University of Szeged, the University of Budapest, and the Sorbonne. His poems were published in several magazines in France. In 1930 he joined the Communist Party which was illegal in Hungary. He later worked as a journalist for the magazine SZEP SZON.
