Because it's so large, every area of Puerto Rico has really defined itself. There's the history and culture of San Juan, the tropical forest, all of the little villages, the sandy beaches on the southern coast where you can rent jet skis, and the great diving on the east coast where the cliffs are. Everywhere you go, it feels like a completely different destination. I loved the east coast in the winter months. Puerto Rico is a great destination if you want to camp, go backpacking to waterfalls, horseback riding, repelling, or those types of things. In San Juan, you'll want to do a lot of walking. There are two Spanish forts there that were used to hold off invaders. The whole City of San Juan is surrounded by a wall. Part of it has collapsed, but it's still very interesting. There is a lot of great shopping in a nice little village area. Old San Juan has a lot of malls and plazas more than anything. There are museums and art galleries in just about every place, but most are on the southern shore in Ponce. Old San Juan has the Casablanca, which is where the government meets. It's an Indian type because there were a lot of Indians who helped settle the island. For most of the Caribbean islands, African slaves were brought in to help settle them.
