It's about examining someone to look at their past experiences, moments of painful, physical or emotional pain. Auditing, in general, covers more territory than that. You might help someone examine something about their life, their environment, their mind, some mental phenomenon in the past. Auditing is a made-up word and it comes from the root word "To listen." There is a lot of terminology in Scientology that is sort of made-up. So, Auditing is a special word because you really don't want to say counselor because that implies, it implies something a little different like advice. That is not what Auditing is really doing. The Auditor is trained in certain procedures, in certain ways of directing the other person's attention, and they know if they do this, they'll get this result. They know how to do that. And so they ask a question, or give a direction, and then they listen. That's what they do, basically.
To become one, some sorts of Auditing are very easy. The Dianetics book was sort of like, "O.k., read this book and anybody can do it. Any two people can do this with each other on a turnabout basis." That's a very simple kind of Auditing. Today, we have, not only the book, but videos that say how to use Dianetics. They give you, for example, a sort of video, audio visual presentation on basic theory.

The process of becoming an Auditor would be, it depends on what kind of Auditor you are. So that very basic Dianetics stuff, pretty easy, you can take a course to learn how to do it better. You can use a video. Now, that doesn't mean you are the best Auditor in the world, you know trained in the most sophisticated techniques, but some auditing is pretty simple and easy to do with somebody. To be an Auditor, for example, that can audit everything that we offer here, I think you could get through with it in a year. There's training in communication theory and practice. There's training in how to use the E-Meter.
