When faced with the possibility of repair or purchasing a new appliance, every consumer intends to find the best products available. But once the cold hard facts of reality come into play, most consumers end up making vital decisions about their home and the appliances they use solely on what works best financially.

But as most experts in varying fields will tell you, it's very possible to get good quality products at sound prices. The best way to ensure that your money is being well spent is by researching the product that you intend to buy.

But what about those items around the house that we as consumers very rarely purchase? One of the most used but least talked about appliance in a home is the toilet. Peter DeMarco is the director of compliance engineering at American Standard. They have been manufacturing plumbing fixtures for more than 140 years and are the world's largest manufacturer of bathroom fixtures and faucets. DeMarco is just one of the many experts that will tell consumers that the price of your toilet depends solely on your preference.

"You can end up spending anywhere from a little less than one hundred to a couple thousand dollars on a toilet," DeMarco said. "Of course, those prices depend heavily on the model and type of toilet style that you are looking for."

"For example, lots of toilets are what we call two piece toilets where you have the tank that's actually bolted to the bowl," he added. "Another configuration is a one piece toilet which is where the tank is actually molded into the bowl so it's all in one piece. It's easier to clean and there are a lot more style type options with the one piece, so you can go anywhere from the very contemporary to the real old fashion design spectrum. And you can take exactly what type of décor you want to go with and of course those are heavier and they are much more difficult to manufacture, so the cost associated with those models is higher."

One common mistake made by consumers is that all toilets are the same. Just as with refrigerators, washing machines and vacuum cleaners, the pricier the toilet is the better performance the consumer will get.

"You pay for performance also," DeMarco said. "For example, the other ones that cost less than $100: some will provide good performance, but you have to pay more for the top of the line. The 'never have to look back' type of performers - you are going to have to pay a little bit more for because it takes more to engineer products like that."

"Products like our Champion toilet or the models that are associated in the Champion family of toilets are definitely something that we put a lot of money and research into," he added. "And we do that to give an exceedingly high level of performance to those toilets."

As far as parts go to fix a toilet, most experts will advise consumers to always seek the advice of a professional before purchasing any parts. Also, if and whenever possible, purchasing the original parts of a toilet will help in the repair process.

"A homeowner can look on our website and even in our installation instructions in every unit we sell to find that there is an 800 number to call," DeMarco said. "This hotline advises the consumer as to what parts are required to repair the toilet if it needs it and where to get them. And we also have instructions online."
