Overview
The Avon Breast Cancer Walk is made up of caring men and women across the country who band together in an effort to find a cure for breast cancer. Participation in the walk requires dedication and a rigorous training program to help participants complete the walk. The feeling of accomplishment and knowing how many people are being helped makes it all worth it. Learn how to get involved in the walk.
Avon Breast Cancer Walk Basics
The Avon Breast Cancer Walk takes places in major cities across the United States throughout the year. Participants walk either 26.2 or 39.3 miles over the course of two days in an effort to raise funds. Those funds go toward underinsured men and women to receive screening and treatment for breast cancer. Participation for the entire event is not required but encouraged. Tents are provided for a good night's rest at The Wellness Village on Saturday night. Participants must be at least 16 years old.
Where the Funds Go
All money raised throughout the country during the Avon walks is managed by the company, the Avon Foundation. Grants are then provided to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations. The money helps educate individuals on breast cancer and provides screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support and research.
How to Participate in the Walk
Participating in the walk is easy. First, pick a city where you'd like to participate. Next, register online by visiting the Avon Breast Cancer Walk website, print out the form and mail it in, or attend an introduction meeting to register in person. A $65 registration fee is required and is non-refundable. This fee is not applied to the funds raised.
Raising funds
Funds can be solicited in person, through snail mail, or through the "My Avon Walk" on the Avon Breast Cancer website. This section of the site requires a username and password and is only accessible once you register for the walk. Here, you can email friends and family to sponsor you and keep track of how much you've raised. To participate in the walk, each walker must raise a minimum of $1,800. If that amount is not met, the walker must either provided the rest of the money she didn't raise out of her own pocket, withdraw from the walk or change her status from walker to volunteer.
Avon Breast Cancer Walk Locations
The walk takes place throughout the country in various cities including: Houston, Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, the Rocky Mountains, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Charlotte. Walk dates vary by city. Walk locations may change from year to year.
