Baby Safety: Jogging Stroller Safety

Your new baby does not have to end your running workout routine. Modern jogging strollers make it possible to take them on all your runs. Here are safety tips to remember when doing so.

When that new family member finally comes home with you, one of the many things that will change in your life is your workout routine. Whether it's going for that quick run before or after work, or training for that next race, your new baby can pose a formidable challenge to incorporate into your routine. Jogging strollers have lifted some of that challenge by allowing your child to join you on your runs.

The design and features of jogging strollers have come a long way in the past few years. Their over sized tires, shocks and brakes make them very versatile and user friendly. There are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing and using a jogging stroller. Most strollers come with some basic safety equipment. Wheel locking brakes and a safety harness for the child are usually standard on any jogging stroller. Other equipment to look for is a hand brake for the runner, a storage basket underneath the stroller, a lanyard to attach the runner's wrist to the stroller. If you are going to be running with a newborn, ensure your stroller comes with a head and neck support. If it does not, you will need to purchase one. They are the same types that are used for newborns in car seats. It is recommended by many that children under 12 months old do not ride in jogging strollers at all due to the possible rough ride. If you choose to take your newborn, take care to ensure his ride is as good as yours. Stay on the smooth pavement, recline the seat as far back as it will go and ensure the harness is properly fitting and locked.

Other safety factors to look for when purchasing a jogging stroller is the depth of the child's seat, the quality of the harness, the locking mechanism for keeping the stroller unfolded and the overall balance of the stroller.

Test drive the prospective stroller before purchasing it. Walk the prospective stroller around the store. Take the stroller for a run down an aisle for a couple of strides. Ensure that your feet don't hit the rear axle or storage basket. If you find this after your purchase, it will force you to run on the outside of the stroller, widening you overall, making running on trails or roads dangerous.

The oversized wheels and suspension systems on jogging strollers can make them an ease to use while you're running. These features can also make the stroller easy to get away from you. Always keep your hands on the stroller when the locking wheel brake is not applied and keep the lanyard attached to your wrist at all times.

Jogging with your child can be a great way for you to continue your exercise routine and be a great adventure for your child. There are a few steps to ensure that your child is kept safe during these adventures.

Ensure the stroller is unfolded and all the locks are properly engaged. The last thing you want is the stroller to collapse with your child in it.

Strollers are back heavy. Do not hang items from the handle. If the child's seat is reclined or the storage compartment is full, the center of gravity of the stroller may be affective.

Use the brakes. Whenever the stroller is not being pushed, use the wheel locks and hand brake to ensure the stroller does not roll away from you.

Use the wrist safety harness. This nylon strap connects you to your stroller, ensuring the stroller does not get away from you while you're running. A word of caution regarding these straps; if you are to fall while running, your weight will pull the handle bar of the stroller down, toppling the stroller backwards.

Your child will be exposed to the same elements that you are. Whether it is hot, cold, windy or wet, protect your child from the elements. They will be much more inclined to want to join you again if they enjoy your runs as much as you do.

The first time you take your stroller out, take it easy. Slow your pace and get used to the stroller. It takes a bit of getting used to before you will be able to run at your normal pace while pushing a stroller.

Nothing is better than including your children in your daily activities. Where including them in your workout routine may be challenging, it is one of the most rewarding and memorable things you can do for yourself and your child.
