Find out how to select a babysitter; what to look for, what to ask and what references to check out.
You should always use great care and caution when you are selecting a babysitter for your children. How do you choose a babysitter? First off, never hire a babysitter without checking their references. Ask you friends for names of people who have babysat for them that they would highly recommend. Once you find someone, you will want to ask for at least three character references. This should be three people, not related to the babysitting applicant, that know the babysitter and can verify that they are trustworthy and responsible.
Never leave your children with a babysitter that doesn't know CPR or first aid. A life threatening accident could happen at anytime, even if you are only gone for one hour. Most reputable babysitters have taken a CPR or first aid class and have a card as verification. Ask to see the card. Most cities have places that offer CPR/First Aid courses for free or for a small fee. The local Red Cross and the YMCA are two that come to mind. If a babysitter doesn't know CPR, and an emergency does occur, your kids may pay the price.
If the babysitter has good references and is qualified to perform CPR, the most important thing you can do before hiring him or her is to sit down and interview them. You should ask what type of experience the babysitter has with children. If your child is an infant and she has only previously babysat for older children, you want her to assure you that she is qualified to handle an infant. Ask a few hypothetical questions such as, "˜What would you do if the 3-year-old fell and cut her leg?' The babysitter you choose should be able to give you a quick and positive answer.
Finally, once you feel confident in the babysitter's abilities, you want to give them a tour of your home and make sure they know where the emergency numbers are posted. Be sure to show the babysitter where the first aid kit is located, you don't want her to waste time searching for it if it is needed. Post a list of emergency phone numbers in a place where it will be easy to see, on the refrigerator is a good spot. Include the numbers of the police and fire departments as well as a number where you can be reached if you are needed. It is a good idea to list the numbers of other family members just as an assurance.
Choosing the proper babysitter is an important decision. Taking the time to check references, abilities and getting to know the babysitter will only benefit you and your children. Remember, a safe child is a happy child.
