Bartending Tips: Flavors That Mix Well With Rum (With Recipes For Rum Drinks!)

Learn about what flavors mix well with rum and try several drink recipes that include rum.

Due to its great flavor and versatility, rum tends to be a staple in every bar. Whether it be dark or light, spiced or not, rum mixes well with a variety of flavors. If you have rum, but are not sure how to serve it, consider some of the following flavors.

There are hundreds of drink recipes that call for rum and some sort of tropical ingredient, be it pineapple, papaya, coconut, mango, banana, or something else. It is not surprising, then, that rum typically comes from tropical countries. Rum is stereotypically associated with fruity drinks that come in tall glasses or coconut halves, served with plenty of garnishes and a little paper umbrella. It is true that rum works well this way. Tropical mixers provide fresh flavors for refreshing drinks.

Tropical fruits aren't all there is to offer in the world of rum mixers, however. Surprisingly, coffee and rum go very well together. Usually, the coffee and rum are mixed with other ingredients to tone down the flavor, simply because both coffee and rum have such strong individual flavors.

Another flavor that goes well with rum is cola. Not only is this mixer inexpensive, but there are many different flavor options. Colas come in cherry, lemon, lime, and vanilla flavors, all which give an extra kick to any ordinary rum and cola drink. Rum and cola is a standard, frequently ordered drink at most bars. You can even make your own rum and cola variety drinks for parties, considering all of the available cola flavors.

Other alcohols also go well with rum, believe it or not! A classic drink that includes rum is a Long Island Iced Tea. This drink includes several other types of alcohol as well as the aforementioned cola. Try some of the following drink recipes to find a rum drink with a flavor that suits your taste!

Long Island Iced Tea

1/2 oz Rum

1/2 oz Vodka

1/2 oz Tequila

1/2 oz Gin

1/2 oz Triple Sec

1 oz sour mix

Pour all alcohol into a tall glass filled with ice. Top off with cola and stir.

Pina Colada

2 oz Coconut Rum

2 oz pineapple juice

1 oz cream

Mix all ingredients together over ice in a tall glass. This drink can also be blended together with ice in a blender and poured into a margarita glass. Garnish with a slice of fresh pineapple.

Sweet Coffee and Rum

8 oz strong coffee

1 oz rum

1 Tbsp maple syrup

1 scoop vanilla or coffee ice cream

Pour coffee into a tall glass and mix in maple syrup until dissolved. Add rum and mix well. Add one scoop of ice cream to the mug and serve. Use vanilla ice cream for a creamy treat, or coffee ice cream for a rich, coffee dessert. Feel free to experiment with other types of ice cream as well, but certain flavors may not mix well with the maple flavor.

Rum and Cola

2 oz rum

6 oz cola

Combine rum and cola in a tall glass filled with ice. Garnish with a wedge of lemon or lime, or a few cherries. Experiment with different flavors of cola, or experiment with different flavors of rum! Check your local liquor store for different types of rum.
