You have to determine the hiking vacation will entail, whether you are going on your own or with the friends.

Lets say you paid to go with someone or you decided to go on your own. Make sure you have a good pair of shoes or boots that you have worn before. You do not want to wear new shoes and get blisters. You need to find out what kind of terrain you are going to be walking on, if you are going to be walking on rocky paths and so forth. There should not be too much pressure on the feet, so you may have to get a stiff shoe, if there is a lot of uneven ground. If you are going for a day hike through a really easy path, you can wear your running shoes.

For example, lets say you are going to be hiking down the Grand Canyon. A pair of running shoes will do just as well as hiking boots. In fact, when you are going downhill for a long period of time with hiking boots you can lose a
toenail. In this instance, something more light weight and a little bit more flexible is better than a heavy pair of hiking boots.

If you do have boots, make sure you have proper socks. Sometimes two socks does better than one. Also, take some moleskin in case you start developing blisters. They are very painful, and your hike will not be pleasant.

If you have a problem with balance or if there is uneven terrain, you can use trekking poles. They make your balance a little bit better in some areas and help you along as you hike. The way trekking poles work is that you hold one in each of your hands. They are kind of like ski poles that are for actual hiking. You can place them down in the ground and use them as balancing, as you are walking. You will see a lot of people using those particularly in the rougher terrain. They make your hiking a little bit easier. For example, lets say you are climbing up a mountain or hill, and you need to lean on something to elevate yourself to another level, trekking poles are great. They are collapsable, so you can leave them in your backpack, until you need them.

As far as clothing, you need to layer your clothes. If you are going uphill, you don't want to layer, because then you will get sweaty. However, if the weather is cold, you will want to layer. As you get hot, you can strip some of your clothes off, until you are comfortable. In cold weather you want to make sure and wear wind breaking material. You also want to wear light weight shorts and pants that dry out really fast. There are a lot of manufacturers that are making pants that you can strip to shorts. These are perfect for hiking, as you will need to make adjusments on your journey.
