A beginner in the hobby would go to beaches and parks. They are the easiest places to get started in and learn how to use your machine and have a little fun. You actually shouldn't go on to any private property; for instance your neighbors 150-year-old house. You shouldn't go there if you are just a beginner. You should go somewhere else and learn how to find and retrieve without doing any damage. Of course, beaches are wonderful because you don't have any sod to worry about; you just scoop up the sand. The beaches and the parks are the place to learn and have fun. You aren't going to find anything old. You are going to find what was lost last week or yesterday. From there on, use your imagination. Find places where people 100 years ago where; where they were having picnics, where the kids were playing, a baseball field somewhere in your part of the town or an old school. My first Indian-head penny that I found was at the site of a little one room country school that was long since torn down. I was talking with the owner of the property and he saw my metal detector. He told me to go ahead and hunt and I found an 1898 Indian-head penny and there hadn't been any school building there since 1930.
