Benefits of basil are numerous. Basil is much more than just a herb. Learn about basil and it's natural healing abilities.

Basil is a seasoning that has many medicinal purposes. Basil is used a lot in Italian foods, and aids in digestion.

Today herbalists recommend basil for nausea and motion sickness, because of basil's antispasmodic properties. Basil's strong taste promotes the production of saliva, letting the body digest food properly.

Basil has a powerful essential oil that contains methyl chavicol. Fresh basil contains folic acid, and dried basil is a good source of potassium, iron and calcium. Dried basil is also good for the respiratory system and can be used to treat nose and throat infections.

There are many types of Basil it is recommended to try a few different types such as, lemon, red, anise, and cinnamon basil.

When storing fresh leaves wrap them in paper towels and place them in a plastic bag and place in refrigerator. When storing dried basil store in tightly closed container and it is best if used within a year. If using in cooking remember to add before serving because the heat takes away the vitamins and minerals.

Basil is used with a lot of different foods including meats, poultry, salads and soups. Below is a recipe for a sauce that can be served as base for pizza or over pasta.

You will need:

Salt and Black pepper

3-oz. fresh basil leaves

1 clove garlic peeled

7 teaspoons olive oil

1/4 cup grated Romano

1/4 cup grated Parmesan

Place the basil and garlic and olive oil in pan. Fry until brown. Add cheeses and heat until boiling. Turn heat to low and simmer for five minutes.

Remember, basil is easy to grow and can be grown on house windowsills.
