Large ponds are actually a little bit more of an ecosystem. They maintain themselves a little more than the small pond does. The key to large ponds is plants, plants, plants. The more plants the better because all the plants are going to do is eat the same food that the algae does. They are going to create a healthy ecosystem in the pond. Keep in mind even though the pond is large, that doesn't open the floodgates for fish. It doesn't mean you can have a million fish in your pond.
I feel once every six months to a year is a good time to clean the pond, anymore than that is unnecessary. It can actually be detrimental to the pond because you are taking out all the beneficial bacteria. You are taking out the good stuff that the pond has.
