Biography of Wislawa Szymborska, recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Bnin, Poland to Anna Rottermund and Wincenty Szymborski.

BIOGRAPHY

Wislawa Szymborska, recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Bnin, Poland to Anna Rottermund and Wincenty Szymborski. Her father died when she was thirteen. In order to avoid tranportation to a labor camp in Germany she worked for a railroad company as a official. She was educated at the Jagiellonian University where she studied Polish literature and sociology.

Her literary debut was made with the poem "I Seek the Word," and her first volume of poetry, DLAGTEGO ZYJEMY, was published in 1952. She has since repudiated the work she produced between 1953 and 1954 because it was subjected to Communist censorship. During that time she was also writing a review column for the weekly ZYCIE LITERACKIE. She contributed to the underground publications ARKA and KULTURA. One of the few women to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, Szymborska has published 16 collections of poetry.
