Bodybuilding & Methadone Detox

By Charles Pearson

  • Overview

Serious bodybuilding injuries can take a long time to recover and this recovery process often undoes the hard work that the bodybuilder puts into constructing his physique. Many bodybuilders end up addicted to methadone after engaging in a detoxification program meant to rid their bodies of other painkillers like morphine. This can be potentially dangerous since methadone and bodybuilding are a potentially dangerous combination.
  • Body Building Injuries

Body building can be a dangerous activity and those who perform movements incorrectly or when exhausted can accidentally injure themselves. One of the most devastating injuries that can occur to a bodybuilder is a back injury. This not only halts a bodybuilder's workout, but can also cause debilitating pain.
  • Pain Relief Prescriptions

Doctors often prescribe morphine and opiates as relief for very painful injuries. These treatments are more effective than other pain medications, but they have a very high level of addiction.

  • Opiate Addiction

Opiate addiction can cause restlessness, hyperactive behavior, a decrease in coordination, a decrease in a lack of judgment, slurred speech, roller coaster emotions and heart problems. Bodybuilders might heal to a point where their doctors allow them to return to bodybuilding, but if the bodybuilder continues taking these opiates as a result of the addiction, the bodybuilder might end up injuring himself further with the decreased coordination, and might also induce a heart attack.
  • Methadone Detox

Doctors commonly prescribe methadone to help a patient recover from an opiate addiction and fight chronic pain. Methadone fights many of the withdrawal symptoms of opiate addiction. The detox is often done under medical supervision at a clinic.
  • Methadone and Bodybuilding

Methadone is also an addictive substance. Also, the withdrawal symptoms of methadone are crippling for some patients. Methadone detox and bodybuilding can be a terrible combination. Methadone increases sweating, which can lead to more rapid dehydration. Methadone makes the muscles ache, jerk and spasm, which can decrease a bodybuilder's ability to lift weights. Methadone also causes physical weakness. Those taking methadone can also experience drowsiness and dizziness, which can increase the chances that the bodybuilder accidentally injures himself.
