By the third date you will usually know if you like someone or not. If you don't like them, what typically happens is that one of you stops calling. When you see that happening, the relationship is pretty much doomed. Don't send a break up over e-mail and don't leave it on a voice mail. Do it on the phone.

If you have been dating for a year, that's a different story. What typically happens in that case is that one will make up excuses to get the other to breakup with them. They may say they're busy or want to date other people. Whenever you hear those things, it has nothing to do with you. It's them. The best approach is to be direct. Most of the time people aren't direct, because they know it's going to cause a very emotional scene. People are uncomfortable with those kinds of emotions, and if they feel responsible, they want things to be done calmly. Just say to them that, although it started out very well, you can't do that to yourself anymore and think your should not see each other anymore. It is not comfortable, and you should not expect it to be. You don't have to give them excuses. They are going to ask if you've met somebody else. Maybe you have, maybe you haven't. You don't have to tell them. Many people call and demand an answer to why you are breaking up. I tell them they are probably not going to get the answer or not an accurate one. You have to be comfortable knowing that you are probably not going to get an answer and just deal with it.
