Brother Ink Cartridge Refill Instructions

By Ryan Bauer

  • Overview

When most people run out of ink in their printer, they throw out the old cartridge and purchase a new one without even thinking twice about recycling it instead. Brother ink cartridges can be reused many times over, requiring only a few dollars worth of ink each time they are filled. An inkjet refill kit that works with Brother cartridges can be purchased at most major electronics retailers. Check the back of the box to make sure Brother is listed as an approved brand, but even if it's not, most kits will work with Brother cartridges anyway.
    • Step 1

Lay a plastic bag over your work area. Since this is a nonporous material, it will keep any ink that is spilled from staining the work surface. Put on latex gloves to protect your hands, as printer ink will easily stain skin and fingernails, and sometimes it takes up to a week for the ink to wear off, even with regular washing.
    • Step 2

Remove the printer cartridge from the printer by opening up the cover door, lifting the arm that locks the cartridge down and sliding it out of the printer. Also remove the hand drill from inkjet refill kit (see Resources below). Place the tip of the drill anywhere on the top or side of the cartridge, and turn it clockwise. The bit will begin to bite into the plastic, and after many turns, a clean hole will be produced. If this is a black cartridge, only one hole will be needed. If this is a color cartridge, two more holes will need to be drilled over the other ink containers.

    • Step 3

Fill the cartridge with ink until you see the level begin to approach the hole. You can do so by either inserting the nozzle of the ink container into the hole and gently squeezing it to dispense ink, or by filling a syringe with ink and injecting it directly into the cartridge. For a color cartridge, inject each of the three colors into each of the containers until the ink levels begin approaching the fill hole.
    • Step 4

Place one of the adhesive hole sealant stickers that were included in the refill kit over each hole that was drilled. This will form an airtight seal that will last until the cartridge needs to be refilled again at a later time. Insert the cartridge back into the printer.
