How to Build a Banner for a Website

By Contributing Writer

  • Overview

Banner ads can bring in tons of traffic to a Web site. They are one of the oldest and most established ways of advertising on another Web site, and they are fairly easy to make with just the aid of a program that can create GIF or JPG files. Often times, graphic designers ask for high fees that can be avoided by learning to make banners yourself. A banner is one of the most basic projects that can be created in Photoshop or Illustrator, and making a banner yourself can not only save you a considerable amount of money but also allow you to express your own vision and market yourself as you wish.
    • Step 1

Figure out the space you are working with and the appropriate size for that kind of ad. Most large horizontal banners are 468 x 60, but smaller ones vary in size.
    • Step 2

Open up your imaging program, and create a new document in your desired size.

    • Step 3

Choose your banner's background color and fill the background with the paint bucket tool. This would also be the time to add any design elements to the background. Gradients, stripes or polka dots are all elements you can add to the background to create depth.
    • Step 4

Using your text tool, choose your font and create a box on your page.
    • Step 5

Type your company's name and information as well as any slogans you may wish to use.
    • Step 6

Once you have finished, save your banner as a JPG or a GIF.
    • Step 7

It is now ready to use. Upload it to your server.
