Step 1
Measure the area where the bench is to be set up . If it is going around a tree, measure the diameter of the tree and add about another foot to allow room to go around it.
-
Step 2
Set up a diagram for the leg structure the seat plats will be mounted on.
-
Step 3
Use the 4x4 posts to make a half square shape. The two smaller pieces will be the legs and the longer piece will be the area the seat is mounted to. Make eight equal-sized pieces for the outer perimeter and eight equal smaller sized ones to be the inner perimeter. Use bolts and galvanized steel supports to connect the pieces.
-
Step 4
Connect all the outer pieces into an octagon shape. Do the same for the inner pieces. This will create the frame for the seat pieces to be mounted onto.
-
Step 5
Add smaller 1 x 2 wood pieces as support for the front of the legs.
-
Step 6
Cut the 1 x 4 pieces with a jigsaw to cut the edges at a slight angle. If a space is desired between seat plats, the pieces can remain square.
-
Step 7
Sand all seat pieces.
-
Step 8
Attach the seat pieces to the inner and outer perimeter octagons with nails or screws.
-
Step 9
Apply finish to the entire piece. Allow to dry. Apply a second coat.
