How to Build a Landscaping Website

By Billy Kirk

  • Overview

Creating a landscaping website is a multifaceted process that can be daunting to some, but with planning and a few design tips, you can launch a basic site to promote a landscaping business or discuss issues in the field. With regular infusions of content, the site can become popular and rise in the ranks of the search engines.
    • Step 1

Create a domain name. There are many sources of them online; one popular one is GoDaddy, which offers competitive yearly fee for domain names. When choosing the name, make sure it is either the exact name of your landscaping company or something very similar. You want visitors to your site to directly associate the site with your landscaping business. If you are not launching a business, make sure the name relates directly to the landscaping content on the site. Also, secure server space for your site.
    • Step 2

Choose software through which you can upload content to your site. A control-management system like WordPress is one of the more basic systems, and allows for a "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) user interface. Additionally, it is possible to toggle from this WYSIWYG mode to a more advanced HTML-only code mode. Keep in mind that despite its simplicity, Wordpress is tailored to blogs, so a more advanced site design may be better suite to your landscaping site.

    • Step 3

Create individual pages on your landscaping site as needed. If you are running a landscaping business, create an "About" page that provides information on the business and its management. Also create a "Pricing" page that lists what you charge for typical jobs. You can create individual pages in Wordpress by hitting the "Manage" tab and then hitting "Pages." Then click the "Create New Page" tab and set to work entering your information.
    • Step 4

Install a welcome message and the basic details of current projects on the front page (home page) of your landscaping site, if you are a business. If you are a site specializing in landscaping tips and news, incorporating multiple blog posts into the home page is recommended. Consider providing tips on keeping your lawn green, or information on killing weeds and specific lawn enemies like crabgrass. To create new individual posts for the front page, click on "Write" in Wordpress, then create a title and body text. Consider adding images to your front page, whether it is a business or personal site. This will spruce up your offering and keep readers interested. Click "Publish" to submit new posts and make site changes.
    • Step 5

Make as many references to "landscaping" as possible. This will bring up your site ranking on search engines, thanks to increased keyword density.
    • Step 6

Consider a graphical highlight system to feature editorial stories on landscaping methods, such as seed types and recommended mulch blends. Rotating images at the top of your site that link to these stories will point users to your most popular content.
