How to Build Your Own PC Website

By Billy Kirk

  • Overview

In creating a Website, you will want to have an idea of what kind of Website you are looking to make. Personal Websites versus a more commercial venture will take you along two different journeys. When you know which kind of Website to aim for, proceed to either the "Personal" or "Business" sections below.
  • Personal Website

  • Step 1

Choose a blogging software of your choice. Some such sites to keep in mind are Blogger and Blogspot. These sites provide powerful blogging tools, such as Wordpress, that allow for simple and quick posting of material. Registering a name (URL) with these sites will result in a Web address of "name.blogspot.com", for example.
  • Step 2

Fill in all the required information in the blog sign-up form. Signing up for one of these services entails providing a valid email address, picking a site name, providing log-in details, accepting the terms of service, and inputting a verification word so the system knows you are not a bot. Blogger also requires an active Google account, so if you are using that service, provide that information as well.
  • Step 3

Check your email for the verification email, and click on the included link to verify your account.
  • Step 4

Sign in at the site's homepage and begin to update your blog. These sites use a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, so text input and publishing is self-explanatory. To create individual blog posts, enter text into the word processing type format and click either Publish or Preview.

  • Professional Website

    • Step 1

Create a domain name for your business or professional Website. This can be achieved through a number of domain services, but GoDaddy.com is one of the easiest and cheapest, at about $9.95 a year for a domain name. Also, make sure your domain is not taken by first using the service's included domain lookup function.
    • Step 2

Provide GoDaddy with your domain name, preferred log-in information and a valid email address. Also, have your debit/credit card on hand to provide your card number to make your payment. Then check your email for the verification email and click on the link.
    • Step 3

Acquire your own server space. As a professional Website, you will want to run your site on a server of your choosing. This will entail a monthly bill that will vary depending on the speed of the server. Alternatively, try using a friend's server for free.
    • Step 4

Obtain the server locations and redirect them to your Website through GoDaddy. To do this, click on the "Hosting" tab on the top of the site, then on "My Hosting Account." Go through these options and find the two fields where you are allowed to point your domain to the server. Your server provider will provide you with these addresses, but they should be something like ns1.name.net and ns2.name.net, for example.
    • Step 5

Utilize a control management system (CMS) of your choice like Joomla and Wordpress and begin uploading content.
