How to Build Your Own Website at No Cost at All

By Cellina LaForey

  • Overview

It is possible in this day and age to build a website for no cost at all. The great thing about such websites is that if the websites are monetized, you can realize profits almost immediately. With zero start-up costs you can't go wrong with a no-cost website. There are a few things, however, you must take into consideration when building a no-cost website.

    • Step 1

Find a free web hosting company. There are several companies on the Internet that are willing to host websites for free. Some of them require that you agree to allow them to put ads on your website, while others don't have such a restriction. Visit the website Free Webhosts (see Resources) for a review of the top 20 free web hosts.
    • Step 2

Read the fine print before signing up. Some of the web hosting companies have limitations on what type of site to build. Therefore, it is important to read the fine print. You don't want to have your website built for no cost only to find out that it's taken down because you violated a term or condition of the agreement.

    • Step 3

Bone up on your HTML coding. In order to create a website at no cost, you'll need to have some basic knowledge of HTML. HTML is the coding language that is used to build websites to display appropriately in web browsers. You can also download free HTML editors to help create your website. See the Free HTML Editors in Resources to find several free HTML web editors to help you create your website at no cost.
    • Step 4

Determine what type of website you want to build. Whether you build a website for free or not, you have to decide what type of site to build. When deciding the type of site to build, keep in mind the web hosting restrictions. If you're looking to build an online store, make sure that your free host has the capacity to handle such demands.
    • Step 5

Design your website and upload it to your free host. Once you've created the template of your website, upload it to the server. Depending you're your web host, you should be able to upload the files via FTP software or through the hosting company's online control panel.
    • Step 6

Don't forget the images. Since one picture sometimes is worth a thousand words, don't forget to take advantage of the ability to upload images at no cost. Some sites (such as Stock.xchng) allow you to use images at no cost to enhance your website (see Resources).

    • Step 7

Monetize your site if allowed. You can do things like add Google AdSense or affiliate links on your website so that you can make money.
