Building a privacy fence will cost more than building a chain link fence. You must purchase the proper wood and staining for weather conditions. Fence expert, Mark Williams, who has been a fence estimator for six years, says completing this type of project will take time. You must decide how much time you can set aside each day to build it. If not, you can have a work in progress for years to come. Williams says it also gets harder the longer it takes to put your privacy fence together. Some general rules apply in any do-it-yourself privacy fence project.

"You want to set corner poles first. Wood privacy is different because if we go with the wood poles, they are going to be squared instead of round. You want square poles up. Once you have the corner poles, you want to run your string across the other poles. All of the poles are going to be the same length. They are going to be of the same diameter, and your poles on your lines are going to be eight feet on the center instead of ten. Once you get all your poles set you are going to apply runners. Runners go a foot below the topper. You don't want the run on the bottom four foot from the top one," Williams says.

After you complete the following applications, then you can move on to making your fence even. Williams says it will take some time, so be patient.

"Once you get your runners on, you want to nail it and pick it up on one side. You want to nail it up, and then you want to put a nail on the very top of it. On the very end of the line put another picket and put a nail on the top of that one. Roll the string line across the top and wrap it around. Once you have that wrapped around, you will find out what you want your tops to be. This is going to be for the fence to be leveled at the top," Williams says.

Of course, building a privacy fence requires using concrete to set your poles. Make sure you know how to work with the material. Concrete lasts forever, so you have to know what you are doing. You may also need some drilling equipment if your fence is being built on rocky terrain. In this case, Williams suggests getting a professional. The amount of drilling and effort must be combined with the proper equipment, Williams says. You can also hurt yourself if you don't know what you are doing.

Last but not least, you can't forget about staining your wooden privacy fence. Whatever wood you get to build your privacy fence, Williams says it is very important that you apply the proper staining. What you will want to look for is a water-resistant stain. That will protect the wood for at least two years. Williams suggest buying cedar wood for privacy fences and then applying a water-resistant stain on top. Whatever you choose, just remember the maintenance of your fence is equally as important as building it.
