Step 1
Start with title tags. The title appears at the top of the browser and doesn't just help the viewer, it tells search engines what the topic of the website is. Within the head tag of the HTML document, use title tags to create concise titles for each page. For example, "Nutrition Facts For Homemade Elderberry Pie" is much more informative than "Homemade Pies". Make sure every page has its own individual title tag.
-
Step 2
Use the description meta tag to describe the website in several sentences. Like title tags, description meta tags fall within the head tags and build upon the title. Description meta tags give search engines a detailed summary of what the website is about.
-
Step 3
Write text that is easy to read. This may seem like a no-brainer, but if words are misspelled and grammar and punctuation is misused, search engines can't pick them up.
-
Step 4
Write descriptive anchor text. Anchor text refers to words used within the <a href tags that link to another page. For the sake of SEO, it is better to link a phrase such as "Elderberry Pie Recipe" than "Get the Recipe". Along these lines, bold and italicized text can sometimes help search engines discover a website more easily.
-
Step 5
Brainstorm the keywords you want to use in your website. If your website is all about elderberry pie, try to include keywords and phrases that Internet users are likely to search for. Phrases such as "how to bake an elderberry pie", "elderberry pie recipes", "elderberry pie ingredients", "how to remove elderberry stains" are likely to be common search terms.
-
Step 6
Repeat those keywords and phrases until they make up about 4% of the text on every page. This is called "keyword density". You can determine your keyword density by running the text through an application like Textalyser.net.

Step 7
Give images descriptive filenames. Image searches can drive lots of traffic to a website if the search engine can predict what is pictured in the image. For example, burnt_elderberry_pie.jpg is a useful SEO title for people who are conducting an image search for burnt pies.
