Step 1
Pick a name for your website, and create a domain name. Be creative and original in naming your site and in picking your domain name. Make sure to keep the domain name short and simple, as this makes it easier for sports fans that come to your site to remember the link.
-
Step 2
Register your domain name with a domain registrar. A domain registrar is a company that registers domain names and helps individuals set up their web pages. The only catch is the websites they help you set up can only have five pages, so this limits what you can do with your site, so you should probably still consider getting web hosting. A few places to check out are GoDaddy, and Google to register your domain name.
-
Step 3
Purchase a web hosting package. A few good companies to check out would be Fat Cow, Start Logic, Host Monster, and Yahoo Hosting. Yahoo is a bit more expensive, but it offers a lot of tools and helps to promote your website. The other companies offer web hosting as low as $4.95 a month.
-
Step 4
Build a home page using the tools given by the web host. Make your home page easy to read and try to avoid using really bright colors. Make sure to put your site's name and logo in the header at the top of the site. Depending on the type of sport and or sporting team you are making your site about, you will want to post up the current week's scheduled games as well as videos of the previous week's highlights for fans who might have missed the game. If the site is team-specific, post up "Player of the Game" information and stats about how the team performed the week before. You can find this information at the team's official website, or at the official website of the sport your site is about, or from ESPN or Sports Illustrated. online.
-
Step 5
Create a photo page with pictures taken from current games and highlights. This page can feature press photos released by the team, as well as photos of great plays captured on film. Everyone loves to see a spectacular play caught on picture and video, so this will be a great page for fans to come and enjoy. You can get a lot of these photos from the Internet as well as magazines and use them on your site -- just make sure you're not breaking copyright laws! Sites with video and photographs will have clear policies as to what you need to do to get permission to use those materials on your own website.
-
Step 6
Build a statistics page for either your favorite team's stats, or for the entire league of the sport you are covering. You should make sure to organize your stats by placing teams in their proper division, then by their current standing in that division. Go even deeper and organize the stats of individual players on each team by alphabetizing the player's names or by their position. You can find all the stat information you need about each team by either visiting each team's website, or again by visiting places like ESPN to gather your stats.
-
Step 7
Create a links page for your website. This page should feature the official sport website or official team website of the sport or team you are making your site about. Include relevant links to other sports sites like ESPN, the NFL, and so on, that might be related to your sport. Also provide links to other sports sites you think others will enjoy. Make sure the links are relevant to the subject matter of your website. If you have a site about baseball, posting up links to football websites isn't going to be very helpful for your visitors.
-
Step 8
Create a blog or a forum where visitors can build a community. A great way to keep people engaged in the content on your site is to build a community by allowing visitors to sign up for a forum and discuss sports and to connect to each other. A blog is a great way to to do this as well, as people will be able to leave comments on the pieces you write up and post.
-
Step 9
Publish your site and spread the word. Tell all your friends and family about your website, and have them pass the word on and this will help bring visitors to your site. Also you may want to consider getting involved on another sport's website in an online community and spreading awareness of your website as well. The more you connect to sports fans, the more you will be able to connect them to your site. For example visit your favorite teams website, get connected through the forum and let fans of that team know you have a website related to the sport where they can find more information. Create Google Adwords campaigns that feature ads geared specifically toward reaching people who are into that particular sport. Research keywords related to the sport when creating your campaigns.
