How to Build a Website With Dreamweaver

By Bennett Gavrish

  • Overview

Basic word processors can be used to write programming code, but many web designers prefer specialized applications like Adobe Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is a web design tool that allows users to build sites with more customization, features and ease. Web designers with extensive knowledge in programming languages like HTML, which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, can use Dreamweaver's code view to create dynamic websites. On the other hand, Dreamweaver offers a design view, where less knowledgeable users can add elements to a layout and have the application automatically write the HTML code.
    • Step 1

Open the "Adobe Dreamweaver" application from the "Start" menu on a PC or the dock on a Mac.
    • Step 2

Click on the "Files" section in the toolbar on the right side, and then select "Manage Sites" from the drop-down menu.

    • Step 3

Click "New" and then select "Site" in the pop-up window.
    • Step 4

Enter a name for your new site in the text box and then type the web address where it will be stored. The web address should be the domain name associated with your web browser. Then click "Next."
    • Step 5

Choose "No" to the question about using server technology and click "Next" again.
    • Step 6

Choose "Edit Directly on Server" and then navigate to the root level of your active web server. Hit "Next" and then click "Done."
    • Step 7

Go to "File" in the top menu bar and click "New." Then choose a basic HTML layout and click "Create."
    • Step 8

Click on the "Code" button in the upper-left corner to enter code view and use HTML programming to design your site. Click on the "Design" button to enter design mode and add text, image and link elements to your new page.
    • Step 9

Save your new web page to your active web server and then visit it at the web address you entered in Step 4.
