How to Build a Website Free

By Bennett Gavrish

  • Overview

Serious web designers will usually buy a domain name and pay a monthly or yearly fee to host their websites. However, many businesses offer free website building and hosting programs. After signing up for a free account, you can begin designing pages and uploading them to your site, even if you do not have much experience with HTML or coding. The major downside to building a free website online is that you do not own the domain name, and as a result, the web address for your website will usually contain the hosting company's name.
    • Step 1

Go to Webs.com, enter your desired website name and create a password. Click "Create a Website" to start designing your pages. If your chosen name is not available, you will be prompted to choose a different one.
    • Step 2

Go to the GeoCities homepage (see Resources below), which is run by Yahoo, and click the "Sign Up" button under the GeoCities Free section. Then log in with your Yahoo account or create a new one to begin building your site.

    • Step 3

Go to the Blogger homepage and log in with your Google account or create a Google account. Choose a name for your site, add blog entries and start designing your blog website. Many companies and individuals use blog templates as their main website even if they don't have traditional blog entries.
    • Step 4

Go to Google Sites and log in with your Google account or create a Google account. Then click "Create New Page" at the top of the screen to start adding elements to your website.
