How to Build a Website on a Mac

By Ed Oswald

  • Overview

Apple has made it extremely easy for just about anyone to create a website on the Mac. Using tools provided by Apple, you can have a full-featured website up in as little as an hour. This is a far shorter method than coding it by hand, and is especially useful to those just starting out in Web design.
  • Preparing to Use iWeb

  • Step 1

Ensure that you have iLife '08 or '09 installed by clicking "Finder," then "Applications," then look for the iWeb application. Most Macs manufactured in these years will come with it pre-installed. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a copy of iLife, available from Apple for $79.
  • Step 2

Ensure you have a MobileMe account (you would have signed up for this either at purchase or separately). While you can upload a website made in iWeb to an outside Web host, it is much easier to use iWeb's built in support for MobileMe to launch your website.
  • Step 3

Click on the iWeb application icon. The icon looks like a bulletin board with a paper and photo tacked to it. iWeb will load.
  • Using iWeb

    • Step 1

After iWeb loads, click "File," then "New Site." A window with templates will pop up. Select the template you wish to use from the left hand column. In the right hand column of the window, page templates will appear. Since we want to create the main page, click the "Welcome" page, then the "Choose" button in the lower right hand corner.
    • Step 2

On the page that loads, a default layout will appear. To edit each section, click on it. For text, type in the desired text you would like to be shown. To change the pictures, open the media folder by clicking "Media" in the lower menu bar, find and select the picture, then drag and drop it in the desired location. The default picture will be replaced by the new one.
    • Step 3

Create other pages as necessary. For each new page desired, click "File," then "New Page," and select the page template desired. Follow similar procedures as Step 2 to edit each page to your liking.
    • Step 4

As you create each page, it is automatically added to the navigation menu. If you would like to not include it in this menu, with the page selected, click "Inspector" in the lower menu bar. Select the page menu (second from the left), and then uncheck "Include page in navigation menu."
  • Uploading Your Website

    • Step 1

Proof each page for errors and ensure all pages are designed to your liking once you have designed all your pages for your site.
    • Step 2

Upload the page to MobileMe by clicking "File" then "Publish to MobileMe." The rest of the process is automatic. The software may ask you to create an account if you already do not have one.
    • Step 3

Ensure the site has uploaded correctly by visiting Replace YourMemberName with your MobileMe username.
