  • Overview

If want to build a website and are undecided as to which software program to use, keep your credit card in your pocket and do a little research on free web creation software. Years ago, webmasters were almost forced to purchase the somewhat expensive HTML editing software. Today, with so many open source alternatives, web developers have choices. There are several effective ways to build websites with free software.
    Free Software
    • Step 1

Notepad is software that comes with just about every computer. You can create web pages with this basic no-frills software. The one caveat about using Notepad is that you must be comfortable with HTML coding. The software will not tell you when you've made a coding error. You'll only see the results of your error on the actual webpage.
    • Step 2

Download NetObjects Essentials free web design software. If you want something a little more user friendly, use NetObject's free website design software. It allows you to drag and drop your web layouts, and it has a built-in FTP function. Aside from it being free, NetObjects offers a complete User's Guide that will help you use the software.

    • Step 3

Personal Web Kit is a free software program that works on Windows systems. You don't need to know HTML, and you can conceivably have a website designed in minutes. The software has many templates to choose from, so you won't have to spend time creating a template from scratch.
    • Step 4

Create a website with Free HTML Editor. HTML Editor is another free downloadable software program for creating websites. It has FTP function built in, along with drag and drop features. Free HTML Editor has instructional wizards to help you insert links and images into your website.
    • Step 5

Visit websites such as Developershome.com or CMS Review.com. Such websites have links to various free web editing software. After spending a little time on such sites, you can decide which of the various free software programs have the features you need.
    • Skill: Moderate
    • Tip: The great thing about free software is that if you don't like one, you can always uninstall it and try another one.
