Throughout the decades, the name, "Burberry" has been attached with a wide array of valuably sophisticated fragrances, accessories and clothing.

Initially known for its fine outdoor apparel, Burberry was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry.After serving as an apprentice in drapery, Burberry opened a store in Basingstoke, Hampshire.Fourteen years later, the focus of the store began to hone in on outdoor wear.Burberry immediately became popular to both avid sportsmen and local citizens.He opened his first London store in Haymarket in 1891, which still serves as the business's headquarters.

With its primary focus being the great outdoors, Thomas Burberry concocted a new type of textile called gabardine fabric.The breakthrough material enabled an extreme amount of wear and was not constricting.The breathable fabric was also created to be water-resistant by waterproofing the yarn before weaving.

Burberry's popularity within the realm of outdoor activities remained consistently prestigious as he dressed a long list of notable sportsmen and women. 1911 marked the year that Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole.His efforts were equally recognized as the Burberry apparel he was wearing while doing so. Three years later, Ernest Shackleton established a new feat of his own by being the first man to trek across Antarctica.He was also dressed by the famous brand.When the Second World War came about, Thomas Burberry was asked to modify military wear for the British soldiers.Being no stranger to the task, Burberry created functional and durable gear to don the troops.From his designs, the famous trench coat with the red, white, black and camel check lining was born. The popular neutral check reached high status in the 1960's when Burberry began featuring the pattern on umbrellas, scarves and luggage.The pattern that stands as a synonym to Burberry was officially trademarked in 1967.To this day, the elegance of the plaid pattern has gone beyond its first accessories.Both everyday people and celebrities can be draped in the Burberry signature via bucket hats, belts, sunglasses and other accessories.

Burberry's success continued throughout the decades.Many more stores have sprouted from the very first outfitters shop in Basingtoke.In the early 20th century, stores opened in Paris and New York while 1970 brought about further growth in New York with its first flagship store on 57th Street.In the latter 20th century and breaking through into the 21st, Burberry started to courteously blossom with stores in San Francisco, Chicago, Boston New Jersey, Barcelona, Milan, Munich and many more.

The beginning of the 21st century introduced a new venture for the company.They introduced their first fragrance, Touch, which was accessible to both men and women.In 2003, they presented another fragrance for women called Brit.The bottle that was luxuriously patterned with the famous check later released a men's version in 2004.
