How to Buy Metal Buildings in California

By Jackie Johnson

  • Overview

Steel buildings are a good alternative to site-built structures since they are fast to erect and less expensive than structures made from wood. There are many places to buy metal buildings in California. These buildings have many uses from residential buildings for people to barns, storage and churches. The steel building industry has come a long way, and these buildings can be erected complete with finished interiors that make them suitable for virtually any use.

    • Step 1

Start by contacting your local county or city department to find out what kinds of buildings you can erect on property in California. There may be zoning restrictions for the types of buildings they will allow on your land. California building codes also require buildings to be approved for seismic activity. If you live near a known fault, they may have different types of construction requirements. They may also require certified drawings of the building you want to erect on your land, which you will have to get before officials will approve the permit.
    • Step 2

Determine if the use you have for the metal building is appropriate. California has extreme climatic differences along with air quality and types. If you get frequent ocean breezes, the salt in the air might corrode certain types of metal buildings over time. You will probably want to look at buildings that have good coatings and no exposed metal surfaces on the exterior and interior. If you are going to keep livestock in the building, you may need to look at buildings that use insulation and heating or cooling if you live in a part of California with extreme heat in the summer or extreme cold in the winter.

    • Step 3

Contact local companies that service your area. You will have to have the building delivered to your property, and the closer you are to where it is shipped from, the lower the delivery fees will be. You also have the option of ordering your building online if that saves money for you.
    • Step 4

Choose your building based on the local requirements for seismic safety and other local ordinances. Most of the dealers know what the requirements are and they will be able to help you.
    • Step 5

Find someone who can put the building up for you if the dealer, whether online or locally, doesn't have a resource for putting the buildings up. Ask your dealer if they have to be inspected before they can be occupied.
