How to Buy a Star

By Rose Kivi

  • Overview

Buying a star is a novelty purchase. You do not really own the star. The companies that sell stars are letting you name a star for a fee. So you are purchasing the right to name the star, sort of. The name is not official. Only the International Astronomical Union (IAU) can officially name a star. If you purchase a star name, it will not be recognized by IAU or astronomers. The star name will only be recognized by you and the company you purchased it from. Purchasing a star name is still fun, as long as you realize that the name is not official.
