There aren't any camping sites within the city, but half of Colorado is public land. So, we are just on the lip of one of the world's great outdoor playgrounds. There is camping everywhere. There are 12 national forests here. Literally, if you put them all together, there are 1000s of places that you could camp within the state. If you're on one of the highways like Interstate 70, the main access road runs into the mountains. Idaho Springs is just 30 miles away. There is a National Forest Information Center, and those are excellent to stop in and buy a map of the forest you are going to be in. It has every hiking trail and it has every campground site and those are $3 for the maps. They give you a lot of information.
